If you’ve never been to a chiropractor before, it’s completely normal to have a few questions. Is it just about cracking backs? Do I have to keep going forever? What actually happens behind those doors?
At Collins Chiropractic, it isn’t about masking symptoms or chasing a temporary "pop." It’s about restoring proper biomechanics so your body can function, heal, and perform at its absolute best.
Whether you’re a Palouse-area athlete trying to get back on the track, a UI student dealing with tech-neck, or someone who just wants to garden without back pain, here is exactly what a chiropractor does—and what you can expect when you walk through our doors in Moscow.
The Core Mission: Restoring Communication
I used to think that chiropractic care was about “popping” things out of a stuck position, or “loosening up” joints. Now I know it's more about moving joints INTO a biomechanically sound position. Promoting movement, joint stability, and-most importantly- brain-body communication.
Form = Function:
Your brain communicates with every single cell, tissue, and organ in your body via the nervous system, which travels right down your spine. When spinal joints become misaligned or lose their normal motion (what we call a subluxation), it can irritate nearby nerves, impairing that important communication connection.
The Collins Chiropractic Difference: Precision Over Guesswork
Not all chiropractic care is the same. We base everything we do within the Gonstead Chiropractic framework. This means we don't just give you a general, full-body adjustment and hope for the best.
We look at the spine as an engineering marvel. We use specific visualization, instrumentation, palpation, and X-rays (when applicable) to pinpoint the exact segment that is causing the issue. Our rule is simple: find the problem, fix it, and leave it alone. Your body should do the healing, we just give it a push in the right direction.
What to Expect Your First Visit
We know that trying something new can cause a little anxiety. We want you to feel completely at home from the moment you step into our clinic. Here is how we map out your road to recovery on day one:
1. The Deep Dive (Consultation & History)
We start by listening. We’ll discuss your current symptoms, but we also want to look at the bigger picture—your daily habits, stress levels, past injuries, and goals. As a former collegiate track and field coach, I look at your body through the lens of movement, function, and performance. We want to know what you're being held back from doing.
2. The Structural Assessment (Examination)
Next, we perform a thorough physical exam. Range of motion testing, functional movement screens, and orthopedic evaluations lead us to a specific problem to address. Static palpation, motion palpation, and visualization of gait, posture, and movement help us know how best to correct the problems.
3. Neurological Evaluation (Objective data)
Simple paraspinal thermography gives us a glimpse of your autonomic nervous system. If your Nervous system’s function is affected at the same area where there is a structural issue, this is called a subluxation. Chiropractors specialize in addressing subluxation.
Our 3-Step Approach to Getting You Back in the Game
We don't expect you to sign up for a lifetime of visits on day one. Instead, we guide you through three distinct phases of care:
- Phase 1: Symptom Relief: Our first priority is always to get you out of pain and reduce inflammation so you can sleep, work, and move comfortably.
- Phase 2: Stabilization: Being out of pain is not the same thing as being healthy. Continued care helps your body repair tissues in optimal positions, and allows your body to begin learning how to hold alignment and move properly. The goal: optimal healing and relapse prevention.
- Phase 3: Prevention & Performance: Just like tuning up a high-performance car, this phase is about maintaining your spinal health so you can function at your peak and prevent future wear-and-tear.
